Northfield Common Cleanup Service Project

On Sunday April 24, 2022 American Legion Post 1819 coordinated a service project of cleaning up the Northfield common and it went very well with ~30 AFROTC cadets joining. They accomplished more than anticipated and the common looks great. Here’s some bullets from the project:

  • Event timeframe: Sunday, Apr 24th, 1300-1500
  • 30+ AFROTC Cadets, 2 AFROTC instructors and Col Mark Ciero (Detachment Commander)
  • ~10 participants also assisted with stocking stuffing in Dec
  • Participating seniors were 6 days prior to commencement & commissioning
  • I coordinated with the town manager and town provided water & power
  • Power washed the main monument, fountain and surrounding bricks
  • Raked leaves and debris from entire common and disposed of 12-15 bags of the same
  • Picked up trash in entire area (common, road & sidewalks) up to surrounding storefronts
  • The Donahue couple said they were buying Subway for the cadets but Subway did not have enough bread made; they made a donation to AFROTC Det 867.

“Again, excellent turnout today in support of Northfield and the American Legion Post 1819. We were energized by the teamwork and rewarded by restoring the war memorials as well as cleaning up the town commons. The Donahue couple, bred-and-born icons of Northfield, were sweet to come by and thank us for the hardwork, but we serve without expectations as a Core Value. This was a strong start to where we hope to go in community partnering with the American Legion Post 1819 and others. We thank NU’s Post 1819 for the idea, supplies, and especially for Col-ret Brett Nelson’s (another NU alum) service today. (We also had Col Kevin’s blower and detergent.) We will grow this relationship through mutual efforts and memberships.”
